Revitalizing the SAARC Process

Nepal Council of World Affairs organized an interaction programme on "Revitalizing the SAARC Process" on August 3, 2017 at NCWA Hall, Pulchowk, H.E. Mr. Amjad Hussain B. Sial, Secretary General of SAARC explained in details how the revitalizing process is moving forward. He also mentioned the means and ways to accelerate revitalization process. He said that, three ministerial level meeting had already been held over the last four to five months and another one is expected to be held during the month of August, 2017. Number of quarries and questions were asked regarding how the people of the region can more benefit from the SAARC. He explained all the efforts that has been initiated in the past like in the sector of connectivity (Road, Air, and Sea). The questions were raised about tension between India-China-Pakistan too. Secretary General opined that he was not allowed to speak on bilateral issues but his believed that bilateral initiation in high political level would minimizes such conflict. From the Chair, the President of NCWA, Mr. Hemanta Kharel, highlighted the achievement of SAARC over the last three decade. He stressed that for revitalization of SAARC process, leaders of SAARC nations need to build greater trust and regular consultation among themselves. None of member states should engage in domestic policy of each other he further said. He added that SAARC member state should learned from the experiences of other regional institution like, ASEAN, which are functioning efficiently and effectively. At the end of programme vote of thanks was given by Vice President of NCWA, Mr. Umesh Bahadur Malla in the beginning of the programme, the Secretary General Mr. Ashim Thapa gave welcome remarks.
